The Uses of Technology to Fight Violence
Against Women
November
25, 2005
This
conference is a follow-up to the anti-violence workshop which
SafetyNET organized as part of the Fes April 28-30 International
Conference “Mediterranean Women and their Rights”. Issues raised
then were worked out with two NGOs in Fes: Initiatives for Women’s
Rights and ESPOD (Espace Point de Départ pour le Développement).
This conference is the first international event of its kind in Fes
and also the first of a series of SafetyNET annual gatherings to
combat violence against women. The conference also includes a
fashion show and a multimedia performance showcase of technologies
for social inclusion.
Mediterranean Women and Their Rights
April 28-30, 2005
The
international conference « Mediterranean Women and their Rights » is
a follow-up of the international conference « Mediterranean Women »
which was organized by the Fes-Saiss Association on April 24-26,
2003 in Palais des Congrès, Fes. In Morocco, the two years that
separate the two conferences will be marked by the historic new
Family Code, the strong political will to promote equality between
men and women, and the serious will to fight all types of
discrimination against women. The question that remains, however, is
: what about the application of these breakthroughs in an
environment where the issue of women and their rights does not have
the same resonance in all the Mediterranean countries, and where
information and cooperation in this domain is more and more
sollicited? In an attempt to circumvent this and related issues, as
well as opening venues for possible solutions, the conference
addresses the following questions :
1. What is the global impact of the
new Family law in Morocco?
2. What are the similarities and
differences between this code and most
European Family codes? The reference to 'European laws' is framed
with applicability of international human rights conventions (especially
CEDAW).
3. What is the impact of the new
Family code on the everyday life of the Moroccans living abroad?
4. What are the ways of re-asking the
question of women’s rights in the light of a common European Family
code which is bound to be promulgated in the near future in an
environment where the number of Muslims is on the increase ?
5. What is the relationship between
judicial equality between the sexes, on the one hand, and economy,
globalisation, education, health, and culture, on the other hand?
6. What is the state of affairs so
far as violence against women in the Mediterranean region is
concerned?
7. What are the ways to combat this
violence on various levels ?
8. How can we envisage cooperation in
this domain ?
9. What is the relevance of the
Campaign organised by Amnesty International on violence against
women ?
Mediterranean Women
April 24, 25, and 26, 2003
The September 11 events
and their consequences have demonstrated that danger does not reside
in the clash between civilizations and cultures, but between
extremisms of all kinds in various civilizations and cultures. The
Mediterranean Sea, which has always been a unifying factor between
the peoples of various cultures, has now become an economic,
political, and religious barrier opposing the northern part to the
southern one. This state of affairs has created an urgency: the need
for a trans-cultural dialogue between to the two sides of the
Mediterranean sea.
This dialogue has constituted a priority on the agenda of
civil society which never ceased to promote a rapprochement between
people of different cultures by highlighting their historical and
human common heritage. The place and role of
women in this trans-cultural rapprochement is crucial in view
of their role in social development, as well as in the overall
futurist vision of the world in education, the family, etc. and, as
such, determines the future of individuals and societies in this
region of the world, especially with the continuous consolidation of
globalization.
A major objective of this conference
is to promote reflection on the importance of empowering women in
the global development of the Mediterranean region. The conference
also aims at debating the ways in which gender equality should be
taken into consideration not only in economical projects, but also
in education and decision-making. Another objective of the
conference is to highlight the main activities and means targeting
the promotion of women in the Mediterranean region in the areas of
legislation, administration, etc, and compare the various
experiences in this domain.
The conference is perceived as an
opportunity to underline the fundamental role of dialogue in raising
the consciousness of women as to their rights as full citizens
without whom democratization and development can never be achieved.
Scholars, writers, academics, university researchers, civil society
activists from the Mediterranean region or who are interested in
this region will debate issues and seek ways of establishing links
and partnerships between their various institutions.
The major sub-themes of the conference are:
-
Women and Globalization

Women and
Development
November 10, 11,
and 12, 2000
Synopsis
The
conference on “Women and Development” centers on the issue of
development and the role of women in this development. Being closely
linked to the social,
economic, intellectual, political, civil, legal, administrative, and
organizational aspects of society, development can be dealt only
from an interdisciplinary perspective. If the 20th
century was based on the supremacy of economy, the 21st century
is bound to take into account humanism which guaranties the
respect of human rights and dignity. Women do not only constitute
half of society, but they are major economic, social, and
intellectual agents that can no longer be overlooked with the advent
of globalization. The conferences addresses the following issues:
-Gender
and development
.
-Women
and development in the Maghreb, the Middle East, The Arab-Islamic
world, Europe, and the USA.
-Women
and politics.
-Women
and education.
-Women
and the media
.
-Rural
women, literacy, and development.
The languages of the conference are:
Arabic, French, and English.
Feminist
Movements: Origins and Orientations
May
13, 14, and 15, 1999
Synopsis
Through
the theme of the conference “Feminist Movements: origins and
orientations”, the organizers
aim to place the problem of origins and orientations of
feminist movements in a context wide but specific enough to foster a
real understanding of these movements
at a universal scale. With this aim in
mind, the conference addresses issues related to the historical,
cultural, social, legal and ideological dimensions:
-The
historical and cultural conditions which crystallized into feminist
movements worldwide.
-The
cultural and civilizational origins which have characterized these
movements since their inception.
-The
nature of interactions between Western feminist movements and their
Arab-Islamic counterparts.
-The
intellectual orientations behind the evolution of feminist movements
throughout the
world.
-Futurist
views on feminist movements.
The languages of the
conference are: Arabic, French, and English.
